Establishment gave me three options, says PM Khan; Claims that his life is in danger
On 1 April, PM Imran Khan during an interview with ARY News claimed that the "establishment" had given him three options following the filing of the no-confidence motion. The three options were resignation, no-confidence or elections. On the three options, he said, "We said elections is the best option, I cannot even think about resigning and as far as the no-confidence vote is concerned, I believe in fighting till the end." Further, he stated that there was a threat to his life, claiming that those conspiring to topple his government were "scared knowing that even if he is ousted, the public will continue to support him," adding, "This is why I am saying openly, there is a threat to my life." Shehbaz accuses PM Khan of staging ‘drama of international conspiracy’
On 2 April, Dawn reported that Shehbaz Sharif accused PM Khan of staging a drama of international conspiracy. He stated that the ‘threatening letter’ received from America was the last option to escape the no-confidence motion against him in the name of national security threat. He said, “You [Imran Khan] are doing so because your defeat is imminent on Sunday and you are seeing the writing on the wall.” Similarly, Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari said, “The PM is using the alleged letter to save himself; his actions are tarnishing the image of Pakistan as well as national institutions.” The opposition have warned the government against any unconstitutional or undemocratic step to obstruct the democratic move. PTI is not in favour of ‘brewing discord’ with foreign states, says FM Qureshi
On 1 April, FM Shah Mahmood Qureshi while speaking to officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the PTI government is not in favour of brewing discord with foreign countries and it believes that no compromise should be made on national sovereignty and integrity. He stated that the vision of the government was about keeping national interests of the country supreme, adding that they do not want to support bloc politics at the international level. Pakistan doesn't believe in camp politics, says COAS Gen Bajwa
On 2 April, COAS General Qamar Javed Bajwa state that Pakistan does not believe in camp politics. He said, “I believe today more than ever we need to inculcate and promote such spaces for intellectual debate and discourse where people from around the world come together to share their ideas about the future of their country and world at large.” He said, “The international community’s collective security rests in our ability to integrate our shared goals of global prosperity to an equitable international system resisting the external pressures,” adding, “Pakistan, as a country located at the crossroads of economic and strategic confronts, is navigating these shared challenges in our immediate region and through our partnership in the international community.” (“Pakistan doesn't believe in camp politics: Gen Bajwa,” The News International, 2 April 2022)

INTERNAL
PTI government created 5.5 million jobs in its first three years of power, says survey
On 2 April, Dawn reported that according to the latest Labour Force Survey released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) the PTI government created 5.5 million jobs in its first three years of power which is about 1.84 million annually. Further, the report stated that the number of unemployed people dropped by 200,000 from 4.71 million in 2018-19 to 4.51 million in 2020-21. The report drew a comparison to the 5.7 million employment opportunities created during the entire five-year term of the PML-N government. Protest organized against the closure of Taftan border market
On 1 April, members of different political parties and local traders blocked the RCD Highway against the prolonged closure of the travelling gate and joint border market at Taftan, a town near the Pak-Iran border in Chagai district. They staged a sit-in protest at the RCD Highway and demanded that the travelling gate Rahdari, which is used by the residents of bordering districts of both countries to meet their relatives. Sindh: PTI signals of consequences through its rally in Karachi
On 1 April, PTI workers organised ‘Karvan-i-Wafa’ rally to express solidarity with PM Khan. PTI leaders called for unity against “conspiracies of western forces who want the ouster of the prime minister due to his emerging popularity in the Islamic world.” Leader of the Opposition in Assembly Haleem Adil Sheikh during his public address said: “There are people without scruples who traded national honour and dignity for petty financial interests. But it’s a blessing in disguise that all these characters have been exposed now. Sindh: Government argues for better perspective on interpreting water losses
On 31 March, an advisory committee meeting of Indus River System Authority (IRSA) took place in Hyderabad, Sindh. Sindh’s secretary of irrigation Sohail Qureshi, secretary of agriculture Aijaz Mehsar and chief engineer (development) region-II Zarif Khero during their presentations and discussions mentioned IRSA tended to blame Sindh on water losses and said, “Percentage-wise losses in Sindh are more but quantum of water lost remains less. But interestingly in Punjab more volume of water is lost while percentage remains less.” IRSA is a regulatory body which is to ensure distribution of water judiciously as per the mandate. Punjab: Voting on new CM postponed
On 2 April, Punjab Assembly Secretary Muhammad Khan Bhatti stated that voting on electing a new CM for Punjab may not take place as the schedule of the session will be released and left the decision to the discretion of the speaker. The opposition has fielded Hamza Shehbaz as their representative for CM, currently, PTI has 183 lawmakers and PML-N has 165 in the 371-member Punjab Assembly. To be elected as chief minister a candidate will need at least 186 votes in the 371-member house. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa: PTI leading party in the second phase of local body elections
On 1 April, the Election Commission of Pakistan released provisional consolidated results of KP local government polls. The PTI emerged victorious in 21 tehsils out of the 45 results declared by the ECP while results of 20 tehsils were awaited. The Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl took six seats of tehsil councils, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz four and the Awami National Party and the Jamaat-i-Islami won two each. JUDICIARY
Enforced disappearances are treason, says IHC
On 1 April, Islamabad High Court Chief Justice Athar Minallah stated that enforced disappearances is treason. The remark came during the hearing of missing journalist Mudassar Naro's case at the IHC.  He said, "Can anyone be disappeared without their [federal and provincial governments] will? No," adding, "People going missing is the incompetence of the State. The Executive is responsible if the state agencies are not in control. Why don't we declare the executive responsible for it." Maternity leave is a fundamental right of women, says LHC
On 2 April, Dawn reported that the Lahore High Court ruled that availing of maternity leave is a fundamental right of a woman even if the same is not provided for in the terms and conditions of her service contract. Justice Muzamil Akhtar Shabbir while allowing a petition of a female senior teacher of Punjab Workers Welfare Board (PWWB) school against denial of maternity leave to her said, “Article 35 of the Constitution provides that the state shall protect the marriage, the family, the mother and the child.” He added that the denial of maternity leave to a female would amount to infringing her rights provided under the provisions relating to fundamental rights and principles of policy. ECONOMY
Food prices primary in inflating CPI, says PBS Report
On 31 March, the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) released its monthly report on price trends in the country. As per the report, prices of consumer goods slightly went up to 12.7 per cent in March from 12.2pc from the previous month on the back of an increase in prices of perishable products. The report recommends limiting month-on-month (MoM) price increases as much as possible. The non-food inflation was higher in rural areas, opposite to the trend of high inflation in urban areas and the inflation between July-March rose to 10.77pc year-on-year. In 2020-21, annual CPI inflation was recorded at 8.90pc against 10.74pc the previous year. (“Food price spike fuels inflation in March,” Dawn, 2 April 2022)

Exports surge to USD 23 billion
On 31 March, the Ministry of Commerce released data on the status of exports. The merchandise export was up by 25 per cent and in absolute term, the exports increased by 27 per cent compared to the previous year. The government has projected the annual export target for commodities at USD 31.2 billion and services at USD 7.5 billion. In December, the government has approved the revised Strategic Trade Policy Framework (STPF) 2020-25 with a string of policy measures to promote the annual export target to $57bn by end of 2024-25. Another policy is called the Textile and Apparel Policy (TAP) 2021-25 which envisages diversification of export markets and products. Zalmay Khalilzad meets with COAS, offers to help better Pak-US ties
On 1 April, Zalmay Khalilzad met with COAS General Qamar Bajwa.  According to a statement issued by the ISPR, Khalilzad promised to “play his role” for bettering the ties between Pakistan and The US. Additionally, the two also discussed matters related to Afghanistan and areas of bilateral cooperation. This meeting comes as Khalilzad is visiting Pakistan for participating in the National Security Dialogue.
